Why every UK employer needs a written risk assessment

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires every employer — and most self-employed people — to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. That is a legal duty, not a recommendation. If something goes wrong at work and you cannot show you identified the risks and took reasonable steps to control them, you are exposed to enforcement action, civil claims, and in serious cases, prosecution.

Insurers ask for them. Clients and contractors ask for them before awarding work. If you have five or more employees, you are also required to record your findings in writing. In practice, most businesses of any size keep written records regardless — because it is the only way to demonstrate you have done it.

It does not have to be complicated. A risk assessment for a standard workplace activity — office work, manual handling, working at height — does not require a specialist. It requires someone who knows the work, the right framework, and the time to document it properly. This tool provides the framework. You provide the knowledge of your work.

Common Questions

Is a risk assessment created with AI legally valid in the UK?
Yes — UK law does not specify how a risk assessment must be produced, only that it must be suitable and sufficient. What matters is the quality of the content: that hazards are properly identified, controls are reasonable and proportionate, and the assessment reflects your actual workplace activity. Our methodology is aligned with IOSH and NEBOSH guidance. You review and sign off the document — it is your assessment. For high-risk or complex activities, we recommend involving a qualified consultant.
How long does it take to create a risk assessment?
Most people complete the process in under ten minutes. You describe your activity, review the AI-generated hazards and controls, and download the finished document. You can preview the first section before you pay anything, so there is no commitment until you are satisfied with what you see.
Can I edit the document after downloading?
Yes. You receive a standard Microsoft Word (.docx) file with no restrictions. You can add your company name and logo, adjust control measures to reflect your specific site, and update the document in future if your working practices change.
Do I need health and safety qualifications to use this?
No. The tool is designed for business owners and managers who are not H&S specialists. You know your work better than anyone — the tool provides the health and safety structure and language. Read through the output, confirm it reflects your situation accurately, and if anything does not look right you can flag it before downloading.
Will my insurer or auditor accept it?
Most insurers and auditors require evidence of a written risk assessment — they do not specify how it was produced. Our documents are formatted to the same standard as those produced by qualified consultants. If you are unsure, download the free preview and share it with your insurer before purchasing the full document.
What if I need more than one risk assessment?
Each assessment covers one work activity. If you have several activities to document, run the tool separately for each one. At £4.99 per document, covering several activities is still a fraction of the cost of bringing in a consultant. There is no subscription — you only pay for what you need.
